Flames ship defenseman Tanev to Stars in 3 team trade

*Photo from The Hockey Writers*     With the trade deadline approaching, the stove is heating up. The Dallas Stars have acquired defenseman Chris Tanev from the Calgary Flames in a 3 team trade with the New Jersey Devils, according to announcements from the teams.    The Flames initially traded Tanev to the Devils, retaining 50 percent of his remaining salary. The Devils then flipped him to the Stars, retaining further salary to complete the deal. The Devils traded the rights to goalie Cole Brady to the Stars as well while receiving a 4th round pick from Dallas.    The Flames receive a 2024 second round pick, a conditional 2026 3rd round pick, and defenseman Artem Grushnikov from the Stars. The conditions of the pick are based on the Stars making the Stanley Cup Final. If they do, they get the 3rd round pick in 2026. Horvat sinks Stars again as Islanders secure OT win

Ryan Pulock had a goal and an assist, Bo Horvat scored in OT, and the New York Islanders defeated the Dallas Stars with a 3-2 overtime win on Monday night in Dallas.    Though the Islanders have won just two of their last 7 games, they handed the Stars their 5th loss in 6 games and swept the season series against them. Both times came at the hands of Horvat, who also scored in OT against the Stars in January in Patrick Roy's first game as head coach.    Pulock said after the game that "We play good at times and we’ve kind of hurt ourselves in moments, but I thought tonight we stayed with it. We never had any ups and downs. Blue Jackets snap Rangers win streak thanks to Roslovic and Gaudreau

Johnny Gaudreau had two assists, Jack Roslovic had a goal and an assist, and the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the New York Rangers with a 4-2 victory on Sunday night in Columbus.    The Blue Jackets ended their 3 game losing streak at home and had lost 4 of their last 6 games before this win, ending the Rangers 10 game winning streak in the process. Kirill Marchenko and Roslovic each had a goal and an assist to go with Gaudreau's two point game.    Blue Jackets head coach Pascal Vincent said after the game that "We are growing. We just learn from the past. Patrick Kane had a goal and an assist, Alex DeBrincat had two goals and an assist, and the Detroit Red Wings rolled over the St. Louis Blues with a 6-1 victory on Saturday afternoon in Detroit.    The Red Wings won their 4th straight game and are 7-2-1 in their last 10 by dispatching the Blues, improving to 31-20-6. Lucas Raymond chipped in two assists while Michael Rasmussen had a goal and an assist. Matt Boldy scored two goals, Filip Gustavsson had a strong game in net, and the Minnesota Wild defeated the Edmonton Oilers with a 4-2 victory on Friday night in Edmonton.    The Wild won for the 6th time in 8 games by taking down the Oilers, handing them their second straight loss as the Wild now own a 27-24-6 record. Boldy's two goals made him the only multi point player for the Wild, with 9 total skaters recording a point.    Boldy said of the win that "We needed to get the job done and play well, and I thought we played well tonight. There was a little bit of a lull in the second period, but you expect that against a team like this and the guys that they have. Sandin and McMichael lead Capitals over Lightning for 3rd straight win

Connor McMichael scored two goals, Rasmus Sandin scored the game winning goal, and the Washington Capitals defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning with a 5-3 victory on Thursday night in Tampa Bay.    The Capitals picked up their 3rd straight win and handed the Lightning their 3rd straight loss as they move to 5 points behind the Lightning for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Tom Wilson and Dylan Strome each had two assists to compliment McMichael's two goals.    McMichael said of the win that "I think we have a high-character group, and we know that. There have been many wins this year where it's just straight character that got it done. Travis Konecny scored the game winning goal, Travis Sanheim scored, and the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Chicago Blackhawks with a 3-1 victory on Wednesday night in Chicago.    In their last 7 games, the Flyers have a 5-1-1 record, sitting in 3rd place in the Metropolitan Division with a 30-20-7 record. 7 different skaters registered a point for the Flyers as they handed the Blackhawks their 10th loss in 11 games. Chicago is the worst team in the league at 15-39-3.    Flyers goalie Samuel Ersson said of the Blackhawks "They’ve got a lot of skilled guys that can make plays. But it’s one of the teams that they’re taking chances. They’re taking more risk in their game and trying to go for it, and that’s kind of what we saw in the first period. Predators slide past Golden Knights on road for second straight win

Roman Josi had two assists, Cole Smith scored the game winning goal, and the Nashville Predators defeated the Vegas Golden Knights with a 5-3 victory on Tuesday night in Las Vegas.    The Predators won their second straight game, the first time they've won consecutive games since January 12 and 13. Josi and Ryan McDonagh led the team on the scoresheet with two assists each while Tommy Novak scored a goal for the 4th time in 5 games.    Josi said after the game that "You need depth in this league. There's so many good teams so many teams with depth. So you need scoring from all four lines. I thought everyone did a great job. Bruins snap losing streak with shootout win over Stars

Justin Brazeau scored, Jesper Boqvist had a goal and an assist, and the Boston Bruins defeated the Dallas Stars with a 4-3 shootout victory on Monday afternoon in Boston.    Entering play on a 4 game losing streak, the Bruins got back into the win column and back on top of the Eastern Conference with a 33-12-11 record. They were led by Brazeau, who scored in his debut, Boqvist, and Charlie McAvoy, who had two assists and the winning goal in the shootout.    Boston head coach Jim Montgomery said after the game that "Something has to happen to overcome, to get out of the malaise that we were in, results-wise. We got the great effort by our goaltender, and then our 6-on-5, our great players made great plays. Rangers rally from two goals down to stun Islanders in stadium series finale

Vincent Trocheck had two goals and an assist, Artemi Panarin scored the winner, and the New York Rangers defeated the New York Islanders 6-5 in overtime on Sunday in East Rutherford.    In the second game of the NHL's stadium series at MetLife stadium, the Rangers scored 3 unanswered goals to take down the rival Islanders and win their 7th straight game, now 8-1-1 in their last 10. Nathan Bastian scored two goals, Nico Hischier had two goals and an assist, and the New Jersey Devils defeated the Philadelphia Flyers with a 6-3 victory on Saturday night in East Rutherford.    Playing in front of over 70,000 people as part of the NHL Stadium Series, the Devils picked up their 3rd win in 4 games as they played the first outdoor game in New Jersey. John Marino, Ondrej Palat, and Curtis Lazar each had two assists for the Devils, while Brendan Smith had a goal and an assist.    New Jersey captain Hischer said of the experience that "It was a game you'll never forget. That's a win that brings the group together. Everybody had this circled on the calendar. Jack Hughes had a goal and an assist, Nico Daws was stellar in net, and the New Jersey Devils defeated the Seattle Kraken with a 3-1 victory on Monday night in Newark.    With the win, the Devils snapped a two game losing streak and kept up their run of defensive prowess. In their last two games, they've only allowed one regulation goal. The Devils sit in 4th place in the Metropolitan Division with a 26-21-4 record.    It was the Devils who got the scoring started at home. The only goal of the first period came from Tyler Toffoli, who made it 1-0 with a power play goal, his 22nd of the season, assisted by Hughes and Nico Hischier. Hurricanes ground Avalanche behind Necas hat trick

Teuvo Teravainen had 4 assists, Martin Necas had a hat trick, and the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Colorado Avalanche with a 5-2 victory on Thursday night in Raleigh.    In his 330th game, Necas netted the first hat trick of his career, getting a natural hat trick in the first period. In addition to big games from Necas and Teravainen, Brent Burns also chipped in two assists for the Hurricanes, who are 7-3-0 in their last 10 games.    Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour said of Necas that "Necas is a talent, we know that. Sometimes it goes away for a little while, but it’s always there.
