Here come the Flyers again. Travis Konecny scored the game winning goal, Travis Sanheim scored, and the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Chicago Blackhawks with a 3-1 victory on Wednesday night in Chicago.
In their last 7 games, the Flyers have a 5-1-1 record, sitting in 3rd place in the Metropolitan Division with a 30-20-7 record. 7 different skaters registered a point for the Flyers as they handed the Blackhawks their 10th loss in 11 games. Chicago is the worst team in the league at 15-39-3.
Flyers goalie Samuel Ersson said of the Blackhawks "They’ve got a lot of skilled guys that can make plays. But it’s one of the teams that they’re taking chances. They’re taking more risk in their game and trying to go for it, and that’s kind of what we saw in the first period. They kind of burned us a couple of times and got a couple of opportunities off that."
Starting the scoring in the game was Sanheim, who gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead 6:18 into the game, assisted by Joel Farabee and Scott Laughton on his 6th goal of the season. Not long after that, Colin Blackwell got the Blackhawks on the board at the 7:35 mark of the period, making it 1-1 on his 4th goal of the season.
Early in the second period, the Flyers got the lead back for good. Konecny scored an unassisted goal 3:15 into the period, making it 2-1 on his 27th goal of the season. The lead became 3-1 at the 11:55 mark of the second thanks to Garnet Hathaway, scoring his 6th goal of the season with Noah Cates and Ryan Poehling assisting.
Konecny said after the game that "We talked between the periods, but to be honest, it wasn’t a clean game for us. We did change a little bit, and we were able to get the lead and hold on to it, but we can definitely move on from that one and start fresh."
It was Ersson who got the start in goal for the Flyers, picking up the win as he bumped his record up to 16-10-4. Ersson stopped all but one of the 22 shots he was tested with by the Blackhawks, good for a strong .955 save percentage.
Getting the start between the pipes for the Blackhawks was Arvid Soderblom, who now has a paltry 2-17-1 record in 20 starts. Soderblom made 30 saves out of the 33 shots on goal the Flyers tested him with, giving him a .909 save percentage in the loss.
Blackwell said of the loss that "It's disappointing. We had some opportunities. Ultimately it came down to they kind of outworked us in some of the different aspects of the game. I thought that was up for grabs. It’s been a little while now, we haven’t been able to get a couple games in a row streaking some wins together."
The Blackhawks get back in action on Friday night at home as they take on the Winnipeg Jets, with Petr Mrazek expected to start. The Flyers resume play on Saturday afternoon against the New York Rangers, with Ersson the likely starter.
