Free agent right wing Vladimir Tarasenko and the Detroit Red Wings have agreed to a two year, $9.5 million contract, according to an announcement by the team.
Tarasenko is fresh off winning his second Stanley Cup as he helped the Panthers hoist the trophy just before the draft began and free agency opened. It was his second Stanley Cup title in 5 years after winning with the St. Louis Blues in 2018-2019, the first title in team history.
After being traded twice and playing for 4 different teams across the last two years, Tarasenko gets a little bit of security in his deal with the Red Wings. He'll make $4.75 million annually and has a full no trade clause in the first year. He has a modified no trade clause for year two in the form of an 8 team trade list.
Last season, Tarasenko suited up for the Ottawa Senators to open the year before being dealt to the Panthers. He combined to score 23 goals and add 32 assists, averaging 15:44 of ice time per game in 76 games. He added 5 goals and 4 assists in 24 playoff games.
Detroit GM Steve Yzerman said of Tarasenko "He's a left-shot winger with a bigger body, a little different type of player than our wingers: Lucas Raymond, Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat. He's a bigger body to fill out that top-six or top-nine group with a straight-ahead guy who is big and strong and will go to the net."
Tarasenko has played for the Blues, New York Rangers, Senators, and Panthers across 12 years in the league as a 2010 first round pick. He has 293 goals and 336 assists to his name for 629 points, posting a +74 rating while averaging 17:16 of ice time per game in 751 regular season games. He has another 49 goals and 24 assists in 121 playoff games.
In addition to signing Tarasenko, the Red Wings re-signed Patrick Kane and traded Robby Fabbri while bringing in Jack Campbell, Cam Talbot, and Erik Gustafsson in free agency.
