Another big name is off the board. The Toronto Maple Leafs and D Chris Tanev have agreed to a 6 year, $27 million contract, according to Chris Johnston of TSN. The team has made the signing official.

Toronto traded for Tanev's rights ahead of free agency opening, sending Max Ellis and a 7th round pick to the Dallas Stars. They started negotiating and got a deal done that pays Tanev $4.5 million annually, coming entirely in base salary. The contract ends after the 2029-2030 season, when Tanev will be 40. He also gets a full no movement clause for all 6 years.

Last season, Tanev played for both the Stars and Calgary Flames, being dealt to Dallas at the trade deadline. He ended the season with a pair of goals and 17 assists, averaging 19:41 of ice time in 75 games. In 19 playoff games, he had two assists and no goals.

Tanev is stout defensively, a big reason Toronto handed out the contract they did. He had 6.6 defensive goals above replacement, which according to Evolving Hockey ranks 14th among all skaters and would have led the Maple Leafs. He blocked 207 shots, which also would've led the Maple Leafs and was good for 3rd most in the league.

Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving said of Tanev that "What he's going to bring not only to our group but to our room, just a consummate pro. His ability to play hard minutes against top players, penalty killing ability and then you go from there."

Tanev broke into the league as an undrafted free agent in 2010 when the Vancouver Canucks signed him. He's become a valuable defenseman since and had a big role in the Stars playoff run this past season, averaging 22:18 of ice time in the postseason.

Since he made his debut in 2010-2011, Tanev has played for the Canucks, Flames, and Stars in 14 seasons. He has 33 goals and 157 assists for 190 points to his name, posting a +122 rating while averaging 19:59 of ice time across 792 games. He has one goal and 12 assists plus a +15 rating in 60 playoff games.

After the signing, the Maple Leafs have approximately $7.6 million in remaining cap space according to Cap Friendly.
