One player is back at mile high. The Colorado Avalanche and forward Jonathan Drouin have agreed to a one year, $2.5 million contract extension, according to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff. Colorado has announced the signing.
Having signed with the Avalanche after having trouble scoring goals with the Montreal Canadiens, Drouin enjoyed a revival of a season. After making $825,000 last season, he gets a pay raise up to $2.5 million for another year before being able to test the open market again. He'll turn 30 towards the end of the coming season.
Drouin had the best offensive season of his career donning an Avalanche uniform last season. He scored 19 goals and added a career high 37 assists for a career high 56 points, averaging 18:11 of ice time per game in 79 games. He had no goals and 3 assists in 3 playoff games.
Before turning pro, Drouin played for the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL alongside Avalanche superstar Nathan MacKinnon, who lobbied for the team to sign Drouin last year. In 2012-2013, Drouin had 41 goals and 64 assists to rank second in the league in points while also helping Halifax win the QMJHL championship as well as win the CHL's Memorial Cup.
Chosen in the first round of the 2013 draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning, Drouin has played for the Lightning, Avalanche, and Montreal Canadiens in 10 seasons. He has 96 goals and 241 assists for 337 points, notching a -74 rating while averaging 16:25 of ice time per game in 564 regular season games.
Drouin's playoff track record has not been as lengthy, having played in postseason hockey 4 years out of the 10 he's been in the league. He has 6 goals and 18 assists for 24 points to his name, averaging 16:13 of ice time per game to go with a -5 rating in 36 playoff games.
With Drouin and Casey Middlestadt extended, the Avalanche made a small addition in the free agent market, signing forward Joel Kiviranta to a one year deal worth $775,000 for next season.
