Some more talented flair is off to the Northwest. D Brandon Montour and the Seattle Kraken have agreed to a 7 year, $50 million contract, according to Kevin Weekes of ESPN. The deal has been confirmed by the club.

Having just won the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers, Montour is off to Seattle shortly after with a big contract in tow. He gets a big pay raise from his previous $3.5 million salary and had a big role in the Panthers postseason run, averaging 22:40 of ice time per game, ahead of everyone on the team except Gustav Forsling.

The contract for Montour is a big one. He'll get $5 million as a signing bonus this year and $2 million  next year before it becomes all base salary. His contract has a $7.14 million AAV and comes with a full no trade clause for the first 3 seasons and a modified no trade clause for the last 4 in the form of a 15 team no trade list.

Montour said of choosing the Kraken "I wanted somebody that wanted me. And Seattle came and had that interest from, I don't know when it started, but it was a team that we thought about, obviously, and decided to come."

Last season marked Montour's 3rd full season with the Panthers and 4th year overall. He produced 8 goals and 25 assists for 33 points in the regular season, averaging 23:27 of ice time per game in 66 games. He added 3 goals and 8 assists in 24 playoff games.

Montour's breakout season came in 2022-2023, when he set career highs in goals with 16, assists with 57, and points with 73 in 80 games. He also set a career high in penalty minutes with 107, blowing his previous record of 56 out of the water. He was a second round pick of the Anaheim Ducks in the 2014 NHL Draft out of UMass.

Over 8 years in the league, Montour has played for the Panthers, Ducks, and Buffalo Sabres. He has 66 goals and 186 assists to his name, posting a +40 rating while averaging 21:04 of ice time in 520 games. He has 11 goals and 24 assists over 82 playoff games across 6 seasons.

Kraken GM Ron Francis said of signing Montour "With the addition of Montour, that's an offensive piece on the back end. He's playing 23, 24 minutes for a Cup-winning team, brings a Stanley Cup into the locker room with him."

With the right shot defenseman locked in for the next 7 years, the Kraken have approximately $16 million in cap space following the move, according to Cap Friendly.
