The Calgary Flames on Monday had the groundbreaking ceremony and officially started construction in downtown Calgary on their new arena.

The new arena, which will be known as Scotia Place, will be constructed as part of plans that include building a new entertainment district in Calgary that includes the arena. The project was agreed to in April of 2023, not long after the Flames signed a 35 year contract with Calgary and the province of Alberta to prevent the team from moving.

Capacity of the new arena will be 18,400 and the arena is scheduled to be completed in time for the start of the 2027-2028 season. Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation and the city of Calgary unveiled renderings of the stadium.

Danielle Smith, premier of Alberta, said "Calgary is a city for all seasons, and projects like this one give even more people even more reasons to experience its vibrancy 365 days a year. Once the revitalization is complete, Calgary will be giving every major city in North America a run for its money as a destination for events, whether you're here to see a concert or watch the Flames in the playoffs, as a place for community where friends and neighbors can meet and catch a show, have a dinner, or stroll the Rivers District, and as the best place to call home."

Under the NHL rink at Scotia Place, there will also be an underground community rink that has the capacity of one thousand people. The arena is currently being constructed two blocks north of the Scotiabank Saddledome, the current home of the Flames. The arena will lay in the Victoria Park neighborhood of Calgary.

The Flames have played in the Saddledome since 1983, when the arena opened. It's currently the second oldest NHL arena, behind only Madison Square Garden in New York, home of the New York Rangers, New York Knicks, and the St. John's University college basketball teams.
