Trades still happen, even during the frenzy of free agency. The Washington Capitals have acquired D Jakob Chychrun from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for D Nick Jensen and a 2026 3rd round draft pick, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. Both teams have made the trade official.

A season and a half after being acquired by the Senators, Chychrun is on the move again, this time to Washington as they retool their roster this offseason. Chychrun is on the last year of his current contract, making $4.6 million with a $1 million signing bonus included. He has a 10 team no trade list and will be a free agent at the end of the upcoming season.

Last season, Chychrun matched his career high in points in his only full season in Ottawa. He picked up 14 goals and 27 assists for 41 points, averaging 22:23 of ice time per game while posting a -30 rating while playing all 82 games for the Senators, who missed the playoffs once again.

Washington GM Brian MacLellan said of getting Chychrun that "Jakob is a 26-year-old offensive defenseman who has nearly 500 games of NHL experience. His unique skill set and experience will undoubtedly bolster our blueline, substantially increasing our offensive capabilities."

Chosen by the Arizona Coyotes in the first round of the 2016 draft, Chychrun has 8 seasons under his belt between the Coyotes and Senators. He has 76 goals and 140 assists to his name, averaging 21:18 of ice time per game in 467 games, posting a -69 rating in that time. He has one goal and a -4 rating in 9 playoff games.

Jensen comes back to Ottawa in return, with some additional control attached. He is entering the second year of a 3 year, $12.15 million contract, with a $4.05 million salary that has a $2 million signing bonus included. He's eligible to be a free agent after the 2025-2026 season.

Last season was Jensen's 8th in the league and 5th full season with the Capitals. He ended the year with one goal and 13 assists to his name, recording a -9 rating while averaging 19:38 of ice time per game in 78 games. He played in just one playoff game and didn't record a point.

The move to get Chychrun is the latest move in a busy offseason so far for the Capitals. They made a big one for one trade to get Pierre-Luc Dubois from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Darcy Kuemper and added another scoring forward by acquiring Andrew Mangiapane from the Flames.
