We have a coaching move to discuss. Or lack thereof. Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour has agreed to a 5 year contract extension to remain with the team, according to Pierre Lebrun of TSN. The team has confirmed the news.

Carolina GM Don Waddell said of the extension that "The number one priority for us was to make sure we got Rod taken care of. And Rod's got a great team that he picked as coaches. It was important for Rod and myself to make sure that we have all of them under contract moving forward."

Brind'Amour was set to hit the open market on July 1 as his previous contract was set to expire. He now gets extended long term along with his assistant coaches Tim Gleason and Jeff Daniels, plus video coach Chris Huffine and goalie coach Paul Schonfelder. Brind'Amour has been a part of the Hurricanes organization for 24 years.

After spending 9 full seasons and part of a 10th as a player with the Hurricanes, Brind'Amour joined the coaching staff after his retirement and served as an assistant coach from 2011 to 2018. At the end of the 2017-2018 season, Brind'Amour was named the head coach, replacing Bill Peters, who resigned.

Since Brind'Amour has taken over, the Hurricanes have been one of the best teams in the league. He has led the team to the playoffs in all 6 seasons as head coach, amassing a 278-130-44 record in the regular season and 36-32 in the playoffs. He has led the Hurricanes to at least 50 wins 3 years in a row and won the Jack Adams trophy as the NHL coach of the year in the shortened 2021 season.

Brind'Amour said of his team that "We're knocking on the door. And I can tell you what: I'd rather be knocking on the door than be two houses down, which is where we were for a long time. It's now, OK, what tweaks can we make? I don't really want to change a bunch of stuff. I don't know what we could change to be better. I believe in the way we do things, and the best thing about it is the guys in believe it."

When the Hurricanes eliminated the New York Islanders in the first round of the playoffs this year, they became the first team to advance to at least the second round for 6 seasons in a row since the Detroit Red Wings from 1995 to 2000.

However, the Hurricanes haven't yet gotten over the hump, having yet to win a Stanley Cup title in the Brind'Amour era. Their first and only Stanley Cup came in 2005-2006. This year, they were eliminated in the second round in 6 games by the Presidents Trophy winning New York Rangers.
