Sometimes you just get "goalied." Ryan Hartman had a goal and an assist, Matt Boldy had a pair of assists, and the Minnesota Wild defeated the Anaheim Ducks with a 4-0 shutout victory on Tuesday in Anaheim.
The Wild won for the second time in 6 days against the Ducks, both in shutout fashion after blanking them 2-0 on Thursday. They are 6-2-2 in their last 10 games and are in 5th place in the Central Division. Boldy and Hartman led the team on the scoresheet with their multi point games.
After a scoreless first period, the Wild jumped ahead in the second period. Hartman scored just 35 seconds into the second period, making it a 1-0 game on his 18th goal of the season. Jon Merrill scored 1:21 later for the Wild, doubling the lead to 2-0 with assists from Frederick Gaudreau and Marat Khusnutdinov.
Later in the second period, Kirill Kaprizov netted the 3rd goal of the period for the Wild. He scored at the 11:50 mark of the second with a power play goal, assisted by Boldy and Hartman. Jacob Lucchini scored the only goal of the 3rd period for the Wild, making it a 4-0 game on his second goal of the season.
Wild head coach John Hynes said after the game that "It wasn't a bad first period by any means, but I just didn't think we had a ton going on. Then a couple changes, and then we got off to a quick start in the second, and I think we were able to build the game the right way from there."
Filip Gustavsson started in net for the Wild and picked up the shutout win against the Ducks, improving his record to 18-15-4 in 38 starts. Gustavsson made 27 saves for his 3rd shutout of the season and the 6th of his career.
Getting the start in goal for the Ducks was John Gibson, who saw his record fall to 13-24-2 in 41 starts as the Ducks lost their 7th straight game. Gibson stopped 28 of the 32 shots he was tested with by the Wild, good for a .875 save percentage.
Ducks forward Frank Vatrano said of the team losing 7 straight games that "Trying to keep up the mood is not easy losing seven games in a row. It's not fun losing. We just have to get back on track soon."
The Wild are back in action on Wednesday night to wrap up a back to back, with Marc-Andre Fleury the starting goalie against the Los Angeles Kings. Gibson is the expected starter for the Ducks as they take on the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday.
