Motor City, meet the nation's capital to the north of the U.S. Vladimir Tarasenko had a goal and an assist, Jakob Chychrun had two assists, and the Ottawa Senators defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-1 on Saturday night in Detroit.

The Senators picked up their 3rd win in 4 games and 6th in 10, still at the bottom of the Atlantic Division with a 11-11-0 record. Tarasenko and Chychrun had multi point games, as did Claude Giroux with a goal and an assist.

During the first period, something happened that left a cloud over the game. Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin was hit in the head simultaneously by two Senators skaters in both directions. He was down on the ice motionless for some time, but was able to leave the ice with help from teammates.

Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde said of the injury that "Obviously, that’s a really scary situation with him being knocked out, but he was able to leave on his own feet. There’s no further update, he’s still getting evaluated."

Early in the game, the Senators struck for the lead. Giroux scored his 9th goal of the season, finding the back of the net with Ottawa on the power play 1:57 into the game. With the Red Wings on the power play, Patrick Kane scored his first goal of the season in his second game, tying it 1-1. Tarasenko scored on the power play for the Senators 3:36 into the second period to make it a 2-1 game.

Dominik Kubalik scored exactly 5 minutes later for the Senators, making it 3-1 on his 5th goal of the season, assisted by Mathieu Joseph. With 1:04 left in the second, Tim Stutzle scored with assists from Artem Zub and Drake Batherson to make it 4-1. Jake Sanderson scored on an empty net in the 3rd period to make it a 5-1 final score.

Ottawa head coach DJ Smith said of the win that "I think that was probably the best second period we have played in a long time. That’s against one of the best second-period teams in the league. You’re always going to make mistakes, but as a whole, that’s a really good road game."

Getting the start in net for the Senators was Joonas Korpisalo, who earned the win to improve to 6-6-0 in 13 starts. Korpisalo stopped all but one of the 31 shots he was tested with by the Red Wings, giving him a stellar .968 save percentage.

It was Alex Lyon who started in net for the Red Wings, falling to 4-2-0 in 6 starts with the loss. Lyon made 21 saves on 25 Ottawa shots before he was pulled after two periods. James Reimer came in and stopped all 11 shots he faced in the 3rd period.

The Senators get back in action on Tuesday when they host the Carolina Hurricanes, with Korpisalo the projected starter. Ville Husso is expected to start for the Red Wings as they take on the Dallas Stars on Monday.
