This night, the stars were bright. Tyler Seguin had a goal and an assist, Matt Duchene scored the game winning goal, and the Dallas Stars defeated the Arizona Coyotes with a 4-3 overtime win on Tuesday in Dallas.
The Stars are enjoying a tremendous start to the season, having won their 4th straight game as they improve to 7-3-0 in their last 10 games and 11-3-1 on the season. Duchene and Seguin each had a goal and an assist as the Stars rallied from a late deficit to pull off a win in overtime.
Stars head coach Pete Deboer said that "Those are the games that kind of tell you about your group and how they react to situations like that. We didn’t sag. We hopped over the boards and immediately got back on our toes and started to work for the next offensive play. I liked our response. You’re going to go through 82 games, you’re going to have situations like that where you blow leads or the other team is opportunistic. You have to handle it and find a way to get points, and we did that."
It was the Coyotes who got the lead first in the game. Clayton Keller got them on the board 5:33 into the first period, making it 1-0 with an assist from Barrett Hayton. At the 17:52 mark of the period, Esa Lindell tied the game 1-1 for the Stars, scoring his first goal of the season. Roope Hintz scored the only goal of the second to make it 2-1 Stars after two periods.
Jason Zucker scored a power play goal for the Coyotes in the 3rd to tie the game 2-2. Lawson Crouse then scored to put the Coyotes ahead 3-2. Seguin tied the game at the 16:40 mark of the 3rd period to force overtime. Just 42 seconds into overtime, Duchene scored with an assist from Seguin to give the Stars the win.
Seguin said of his game tying goal that "I was actually thinking about it today. I’ve had some breakaways lately and haven’t scored on my last six or seven of them, and I’ve been shooting every one. It was in my subconscious to make a move and happy it went in."
The starting goalie for the Stars was Jake Oettinger, picking up the win at home to improve to 8-2-1 on the season. Oettinger made 23 saves out of the 26 he saw from the Coyotes, giving him a .885 save percentage.
Getting the start opposite Oettinger for the Coyotes was Karel Vejmelka, who saw his record drop to 2-5-2 in 9 games. Vejmelka turned aside 32 out of the 36 shots on goal the Stars sent at him, recording a .889 save percentage.
Arizona head coach Andre Tourigny said that "I think we need to become comfortable in the uncomfortable. The NHL’s a good league. An opponent at any moment at any game will have momentum, they will push. We do it, they will do to us, that will happen. We need to be comfortable and in control and poised in those situations."
The Stars wait until Saturday to play again when they take on the Colorado Avalanche, with Oettinger the likely starter. The Coyotes play the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday, with Vejmelka projected to start.
