Down two goals? No problem here. Jesperi Kotkaniemi had a goal and an assist, Martin Necas scored twice, and the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Seattle Kraken with a 3-2 overtime victory on Thursday night in Raleigh.
The Hurricanes won their 4th game out of 8 to start the season, sitting at an even 4-4-0 and 4th place in the Metropolitan Division. The Hurricanes were trailing 2-0 before scoring 3 straight goals, two of which came from Necas, who also finished with an assist.
Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour said of the win that "I’m pretty happy with that game, especially the response. Definitely putting on a good push. We had a lot of good opportunities, and finally cashed in on the one. So, I think we got the two points we deserved."
Seattle started the scoring in the game. Oliver Bjorkstrand found the back of the net 11:24 into the first period, making it 1-0 on his second goal of the season. At the 14:52 mark of the period, Devin Shore scored for the Kraken, getting an assist from Bjorkstrand as his first goal of the season made it a 2-0 Kraken lead.
Necas got a goal back for the Hurricanes before the end of the period, cutting the deficit to 2-1 with Kotkaniemi and Michael Bunting assisting. Kotkaniemi tied the game in the 3rd period, scoring with assists from Necas and Brady Skjei. With 10 seconds left in overtime, Necas won the game for the Hurricanes with Sebastian Aho and Tony DeAngelo getting assists.
Getting the start for the Hurricanes was Frederik Andersen, who stayed undefeated on the season by improving to 3-0-0. Andersen stopped 24 of the 26 shots the Kraken sent at him, recording a .923 save percentage in the win.
It was Joey Daccord in between the pipes for the Kraken, getting the overtime loss to drop to 2-0-2 on the season. Daccord turned aside 42 out of the 45 shots on goal that the Hurricanes had, giving him a .933 save percentage.
Shore said after the game that "We felt good. We felt like we were doing a lot of good things. Obviously that's a really good team over there. We battled even when they tied it up and gave ourselves a chance in overtime, and it came down to the last shot."
The Hurricanes resume play by taking on the San Jose Sharks on Friday night, with Antti Raanta the expected starter. The Kraken travel to face the Florida Panthers on Saturday, with the projected starter being Philipp Grubauer.
