The star has finally been signed. The Anaheim Ducks and forward Trevor Zegras have agreed to a 3 year, $17.25 million contract, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. The Ducks have confirmed the signing.
At the end of last season, Zegras became an RFA. He did not report to training camp or play in preseason games with the Ducks because he did not have a contract yet, but now that issue is settled and he can build up for opening night in a Ducks uniform.
Zegras had another strong campaign for the Ducks last season. He tied a career high in goals with 23 and set a career high in assists with 42 for a career high 65 points. He posted a -24 rating and averaged a career high 18:50 of ice time per game in 81 games for the Ducks.
Ducks GM Pat Verbeek said of Zegras that "When we look at him, I'm looking for him to develop more of a two-way game, and there's going to be a lot of things that he's going to be able to learn from coach Greg Cronin and how we're going to play as a group. So I think when I had some really good discussions before we signed the contract with Trevor on some of the things we were going to be asking him to do, and Trevor was all in."
A former first round pick, Zegras led the Ducks in scoring last season with his 65 points in 81 games. He made his NHL debut near the end of the Covid shortened 2021 season and finished as the runner up for the Calder Trophy in the 2021-2022 season.
The contract for Zegras does not include any bonuses attached. He'll make $5.75 million annually over the 3 years, running through the end of the 2025-2026 season. At the end of 2025-2026, Zegras will still have RFA eligibility.
With Zegras signed, the Ducks now have just one RFA left to sign, and that is defenseman Jamie Drysdale. The Ducks open the season against the defending champion Vegas Golden Knights on October 14.
