Things are looking up in the motor city. Alex DeBrincat had two goals and an assist, Andrew Copp scored twice, and the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins with a 6-3 victory on Wednesday night in Detroit.
After dropping the first game of the season, the Red Wings have won 3 games in a row to move to 3-1-0 on the season. They were led in scoring by DeBrincat, who has started out his tenure in Detroit with 5 goals and 3 assists in 4 games.
DeBrincat said of his hot start in Detroit that "This kind of start makes everything easier, and a lot of that is because of my linemates and teammates. We have so many scoring options that it is hard for anyone to cover all of them."
Evgeni Malkin started the scoring right away for the Penguins. Just 53 seconds into the game, he gave them a 1-0 lead with his 3rd goal of the season, assisted by Reilly Smith and Erik Karlsson. DeBrincat scored at the 12:53 mark of the period to tie the score 1-1, assisted by Austin Czarnik and Shayne Gostisbehere.
Ben Chiarot scored for the Red Wings 5:21 into the second. pushing their lead to 2-1 on his first goal of the season. At the 15:42 mark of the second, Copp scored his second goal of the year to make it 3-1 Red Wings. On the power play with 2:11 left in the period, David Perron scored to make it 4-1 Red Wings after 40 minutes.
Karlsson scored 3:37 into the 3rd period for the Penguins, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Bryan Rust scored his 4th goal of the season at the 13:03 mark of the 3rd, making it a 4-3 game with Karlsson and Marcus Pettersson assisting. 21 seconds apart from each other, both Copp and DeBrincat scored empty net goals to make it a 6-3 score.
Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde said that "I liked our start in the third period, we could have easily extended the lead with a fifth goal, but we had a couple plays where we tracked back into our zone and didn’t get coverages sorted out. They got two goals through traffic, and that put us back on our heels."
Making the start in net for the Red Wings was Ville Husso, who got the win in net to improve to 2-1-0 on the season. Husso stopped 30 of the 33 shots he faced from the Penguins, posting a .909 save percentage.
Getting the start for the Penguins was Tristan Jarry, who couldn't put together a win as he dropped to 1-2-0 this season. Jarry turned aside 23 out of the 27 shots on goal that the Red Wings sent at him, giving him a .852 save percentage.
Pittsburgh head coach Mike Sullivan said after the game that "Detroit’s a good team, and we just lost ourselves for six or seven minutes in the second period. They scored a couple goals, but we fought back into the game."
Both teams get back in action on Saturday. The Red Wings have an afternoon tilt against the Ottawa Senators, with Husso projected to get the start. The Penguins square off against the St. Louis Blues, with Jarry the expected starter.
