Goalie depth is an important thing for a team to have. The Toronto Maple Leafs and goalie Martin Jones have agreed to a one year, $875,000 contract, according to an announcement by the Maple Leafs on Wednesday.
The signing of Jones gives the Maple Leafs a goalie room of Jones, Matt Murray, Ilya Samsonov, and Joseph Woll heading into training camp, but Murray will be placed on LTIR prior to opening day and will be out indefinitely with an injury.
Jones spent last season with the Seattle Kraken and helped them qualify for the playoffs. He posted a 27-13-3 record with 3 shutouts and 20 quality starts, recording a .886 save percentage and 2.99 GAA in 42 starts and 48 games. He appeared in one game and made two saves in the playoffs in 18 minutes.
Originally signed as an undrafted free agent, Jones had 5 stellar seasons to start his career. In 4 straight seasons from 2015-2016 to 2018-2019, Jones started at least 60 games a season for the San Jose Sharks. From 2015-2016 to 2017-2018, he had 21.1 goals saved above average and a .915 save percentage.
In the same 2015-2016 to 2017-2018 stretch, Jones also had success in the playoffs. In 40 playoff starts, he had a .926 save percentage, leading the Sharks to the Stanley Cup Final in 2015-2016, where they lost in 6 games to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Jones has played for the Sharks, Kraken, Los Angeles Kings, and Philadelphia Flyers in his career. He has racked up a 2.71 GAA and .905 save percentage to go with a 225-163-35 record, 28 shutouts, and 221 quality starts in 429 starts and 444 games. In the playoffs, Jones has a 32-27 record with 6 shutouts, a .917 save percentage, and 2.36 GAA in 60 starts and 63 games.
The last few seasons of Jones' career have been a steady downturn from the start of his Sharks tenure. Jones has a .895 save percentage across the last 5 seasons and ranked 9th worst among NHL goalies with minus 10.74 goals saved above expected last season.
Woll and Jones will compete in training camp for the Maple Leafs for who gets to be the backup goalie behind Samsonov to start the year.
