The coach is getting rewarded for the progress. The Arizona Coyotes have signed head coach Andre Tourigny to a 3 year contract extension, according to an announcement by the Coyotes on Wednesday.
Coyotes GM Bill Armstrong said of extending Tourigny that "We are very pleased to sign Andre to a three-year extension. He is an excellent coach, leader and communicator who has helped us establish a tremendous culture in our dressing room. Our players like him, respect him and compete hard for him. We are thrilled to have him signed as our head coach for the next three years."
The 2023-2024 season is the final year of Tourigny's current 3 year contract signed before the 2021-2022 season, when he took over as head coach. Now, he's under contract with the Coyotes through the 2026-2027 season.
After finishing with a dismal 25-50-7 record in 2021-2022, the improvements made last season under Tourigny were clear for the Coyotes. They went from 57 points to 70, 31st overall in the league to 27th, goals against went from 3.77 to 3.60, and their record improved to 28-40-14.
Before landing in the NHL, Tourigny coached Ottawa of the OHL for 3 seasons, winning the OHL coach of the year two years in a row as well as the CHL coach of the year in 2019-2020. He was the head coach of team Canada at the 2021 World Junior Championships, winning a silver medal.
Tourigny said of the Coyotes that "The structure put in place by our management has energized our team. I'm also very fortunate to have such a quality coaching staff to work with. It is a pleasure and a privilege to work with them every day. In addition, our high performance, development, medical and equipment staff do an excellent job of taking care of our players. That is the best environment that you can dream of having."
So far this offseason, the Coyotes have brought in Jason Zucker, Troy Stecher, Alex Kerfoot, Sean Durzi, Nick Bjugstad, Logan Cooley, and Matt Dumba ahead of Tourigny's 3rd season behind the bench.
