Add defense to the list of signings in Smashville. The Nashville Predators and D Luke Schenn have agreed to a 3 year, $8.25 million contract, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. The deal has been confirmed by the team.
Schenn was chosen by the Toronto Maple Leafs with the 5th overall pick in the 2008 NHL Draft from the WHL's Kelowna Rockets. After a second stint with the Maple Leafs this past season, he now is off to the Predators as they shake up their roster this offseason.
The contract for Schenn has a $2.75 million AAV with no bonuses or trade protections all 3 years, running through the 2025-2026 season. The 33 year old Saskatchewan native joins his 8th NHL team in his career since being drafted by the Maple Leafs.
Last season, Schenn played for the Vancouver Canucks and the Maple Leafs. He ended the regular season with 4 goals and 18 assists, with all points but one coming with the Canucks. He played in 70 regular season games while averaging 16:21 of ice time per game. He also played in 11 playoff games, recording one assist.
Schenn has played 15 years in the NHL for 7 different teams. Over that time, he has 42 goals and 149 assists for 191 points, averaging 17:35 of ice time per game with a -38 rating in 933 regular season games. He has an additional 3 goals and 4 assists while averaging 14:13 of ice time in 42 career playoff games.
Winning back to back championships with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2019-2020 and 2021, Schenn has been a physical and rugged defenseman in his career. He has amassed 1,434 blocked shots and 3,156 hits, forcing 224 takeaways on defense.
For the Predators, Schenn joins Ryan O'Reilly and Gustav Nyquist as offseason signings after Ryan Johansen was traded and Matt Duchene was bought out prior to free agency opening.
