The Michigan native is coming home. The Detroit Red Wings have acquired LW/RW Alex DeBrincat from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for LW Dominik Kubalik, D Donovan Sebrango, a conditional 2024 first round pick, and a 2024 4th round pick, according to both squads.

A native of Farmington Hills, Michigan, DeBrincat agreed to an extension with the Red Wings following the trade. The extension is for 4 years and $31.5 million, carrying a $7.875 million AAV. He gets a modified no trade clause starting in 2024-2025 in the form of a 16 team no trade list.

DeBrincat said of getting traded to the Red Wings that "It's super exciting. Obviously, growing up here and rooting for the Red Wings when I was younger, it's definitely a dream come true. I do have to say, I don't think anyone's happier than my parents. It's a full family. Everyone's happy, and it's a good spot for me."

Last season was DeBrincat's only year in Ottawa after a trade from the Chicago Blackhawks. He was extremely productive, scoring 27 goals with 39 assists, averaging 19:00 of ice time over 82 games, posting a -31 rating. It was his second straight season playing all 82 games.

Despite an offseason full of additions entering 2022-2023, the Red Wings weren't able to gain any momentum in their rebuild. They finished with a 35-37-10 record, good for 7th place in the Atlantic Division, ahead of only the Montreal Canadiens.

Detroit GM Steve Yzerman said of the trade that "I think we are a better team with Alex DeBrincat. We were looking to add scoring ability and I think Alex definitely fits that. I think he's a very, very intelligent player who can score goals at every level and can fit in nicely on the wing for us. He's not just a scorer."

Over his career, DeBrincat has played for the Blackhawks and Senators, spanning 6 years in the NHL. He has amassed 187 goals and 186 assists in that time, posting a -45 rating while averaging 18:17 of ice time in 450 regular season games. DeBrincat has two goals, 4 assists, and a +4 rating in 9 career playoff games.

The main piece coming to the Senators is Kubalik, finishing his 4th season in the NHL last year. He scored 20 goals and added 25 assists for the Red Wings, averaging 14:55 of ice time and posting a -15 rating in 81 games.

Sebrango is the other player included in the trade, a 21 year old left shot defenseman. Last season, he scored 4 goals and 3 assists in 39 games with AHL Grand Rapids. Also playing for ECHL Toledo, he put up one goal and 11 assists in 23 games.
