A breakout goalie of last season is on the move. The Detroit Red Wings and G Alex Lyon have agreed to a two year, $1.8 million contract, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. The team has confirmed the move.

Throughout his career, Lyon has been a journeyman, having played for 3 teams in his short NHL career. Last season, Lyon exploded when he got a chance in Florida, backstopping the team to the playoffs after Spencer Knight entered the player assistance program of the NHLPA. It wasn't Lyon in net for most of the playoffs, but he is arguably the biggest reason they made it there.

Lyon's contract is $1.8 million over the two years of the agreement, which pays him $900,000 annually. There are no incentives or trade protections in the contract, making the $1.8 million entirely in base salary, which runs through the end of the 2024-2025 season.

The Florida Panthers were Lyon's 3rd NHL team in his career. When he got called up in the second half, he went on a tear, recording a 9-4-2 record with one shutout and 10 quality starts. He notched a 2.89 GAA and .912 save percentage in 14 starts and 15 games.

Despite the surge in the regular season that led the Panthers to the playoffs, Lyon struggled in the postseason. He had a .888 save percentage and 3.63 GAA in 3 starts and 4 games, with Sergei Bobrovsky largely holding the reigns in the Panthers run to the Stanley Cup Final.

Lyon has suited up for the Panthers, Philadelphia Flyers, and Carolina Hurricanes in parts of 6 NHL seasons. In that time, he has posted a 16-11-5 record with 16 quality starts and one shutout. He has a career .903 save percentage and 3.05 GAA, making 31 starts and 8 relief appearances since his debut in 2017-2018 with the Flyers.

The Red Wings signed James Reimer in addition to Lyon, likely pushing Lyon to 3rd on the goalie depth chart for the Red Wings. Reimer and Ville Husso are the other two goalies for the Red Wings.
