There's some 4th line grit going to Broad Street. The Philadelphia Flyers and RW Garnet Hathaway have agreed to a two year, $4.75 million contract, according to an announcement by the Flyers.

In his contract, Hathaway receives a $1 million signing bonus for next season that knocks $1 million off his salary. He has a $2.375 million AAV over both seasons but does not have any trade protections included in the contract.

Philadelphia GM Daniel Briere said of Hathaway that "He helps with our young guys, another physical presence, a guy that can skate, that can kill penalties. There's a lot of assets. His presence, especially as a veteran and the way he's liked on all the teams that he's played on, how tough he is to play against as well. It just helps I think with the development of our young guys up front as well."

Last season, Hathaway played for the Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins. He combined for 13 goals and 9 assists, notching a +5 rating while averaging 11:48 of ice time in 84 regular season games. He added one assist in 7 playoff games.

How exactly did Hathaway play in 84 games? Well, it hinges entirely on how many games a team has left. At the trade deadline, the Bruins had more games left to play than the Capitals, and with Hathaway playing in all but one of those games, he ended the regular season with 84 games played.

In 8 NHL seasons, the Kennebunkport, Maine native has played for the Bruins, Capitals, and Calgary Flames. He has 58 goals, 64 assists, and 122 points to his name, playing in 457 regular season games with a +53 rating while averaging 11:35 of ice time. He also has 3 goals and 3 assists in 31 playoff games.

Hathaway said of signing with the Flyers that "When I look at it, it's an organization that really wants to improve, has that mindset right now that, I don't want to put a label like a rebuild, but it's one that wants to continue to get better and a lot more competitive than they were last year. So that's exciting when the group is willing to put in the work to do that. Being a big part of it as well, I'll be one of the more veteran players in the team with games played. Being able to take what I've learned throughout my career and try and put it into a scenario or a position where guys can take things from it and I'll learn from them and we'll continue to grow really together."

So far in free agency, the Flyers have added Hathaway and Ryan Poehling to a team that is changing things up on the fly with John Tortorella entering his second season as the head coach.
