Returning to the fray in Raleighwood is the captain. The Carolina Hurricanes and C Jordan Staal have agreed to a 4 year, $11.6 million contract, according to an announcement on Sunday by the team.
Staal was set to become a UFA on July 1 when free agency begins. Now, the player who's spent the last 11 seasons with the Hurricanes is back in the fold for 4 more seasons, and the captain of the Hurricanes at that. His 10 year, $60 million contract expired at the end of this season.
The contract for Staal carries a $2.9 million AAV over the 4 seasons, including a signing bonus of $1.315 million in the 2026-2027 season. He has a full no movement clause for the first 3 seasons and a full no trade clause for the final season of the contract.
Staal said of returning to Carolina that "Obviously, it's where I wanted to be. I feel like I've got some unfinished business, and I'm just super excited to be part of the organization and this group of guys. It's exactly what I wanted to finish off my career with. It's going to be a lot of fun and a lot of good future memories."
With his 11 seasons in Carolina, Staal is the longest tenured member of the Hurricanes, who acquired him in a trade before the 2012-2013 season. Just before the 2019-2020 season began, Staal was named the captain of the Hurricanes. He is 4th in Hurricanes/Whalers history in games played.
Last season, Staal continued to be a reliable member of the Hurricanes in another successful season. He scored 17 goals and had 17 assists for a 34 point season. He averaged 16:16 of ice time per game in 81 games played. Staal had two goals and 6 assists in 15 playoff games last season.
Chosen with the second overall pick in the 2006 draft, Staal has played in 17 seasons, split with the Hurricanes and Pittsburgh Penguins. In that time, he has amassed 275 goals and 370 assists, averaging 18:23 of ice time in 1,173 regular season games. Staal had 35 goals and 33 assists in 136 career playoff games.
Hurricanes GM Don Waddell said of bringing back Staal that "Jordan embodies what it means to be a Hurricane. His leadership has been an integral part of our success, and the impact he has made on our organization cannot be overstated. We could not be more excited to sign him for four more years."
Prior to the extension for Staal, the Hurricanes had approximately $24 million in cap space available just before free agency opens on July 1.
