This is the period of lots of trades. The New Jersey Devils have acquired RW Tyler Toffoli from the Calgary Flames in exchange for LW/RW Yegor Sharangovich and a 3rd round draft pick, according to Darren Dreger of TSN. The trade has been confirmed by both teams.
Coming to New Jersey, Toffoli has one year left on a 4 year, $17 million deal he signed with the Montreal Canadiens. He'll be paid $4.25 million this season by the Devils and is set to become a UFA at the end of the year.
Toffoli said of joining the Devils that "The Devils took huge strides last season, and they were definitely fun to watch. They have so much talent and it doesn't seem like they're too far off, so hopefully I can come in and help and just whatever it takes to win, and it's going to be a lot of fun. That's when hockey is at its best, when you're winning games."
Last season in Calgary, Toffoli set career highs in goals, assists, and points. He ended the season with 34 goals, 39 assists, and 73 points, averaging 16:37 of ice time per game while posting a +16 rating while playing all 82 regular season games.
Toffoli has played for 4 teams over 11 NHL seasons. In that time, he has amassed 227 goals and 239 assists, averaging 16:10 of ice time per game and posting a +93 rating, playing in 733 regular season games. In the playoffs, Toffoli has an additional 18 goals and 26 assists in 88 games, including a Stanley Cup title with the Los Angeles Kings in 2013-2014.
Coming back to the Flames is Sharangovich, who is an RFA winger. He has been re-signed by the Flames to a two year, $6.2 million contract that has a $3.1 million AAV. He'll be a UFA when the contract expires after the 2024-2025 season.
Sharangovich said of the trade that "It's a really big chance to step up in my career and play better than my last couple years. I'm really excited and can't wait to meet all the players and I can't wait for the start of the season and to start playing in Calgary."
The 25 year old Sharangovich played in his 3rd NHL season last year with the Devils. He potted 13 goals and dished out 17 assists, averaging 14:25 of ice time per game while playing in 75 games. He went without a point in 3 playoff games for the Devils.
Sharangovich broke into the NHL in the shortened 2021 season after being chosen in the 5th round of the 2018 draft by the Devils. Since debuting, he's scored 53 goals and added 53 assists, posting a -21 rating in an average of 15:49 on the ice per game, suiting up in 205 regular season games and 3 playoff games.
Flames GM Craig Conroy said of landing Sharangovich that "We felt like to get a little younger, he can play all three forward positions, and just to get back in the draft with another pick, would be big for us. This year, not as much ice time, but we feel like if we put him in a position to have success, he will. That's the thing, you have to project forward what he's going to be, and he's a very good penalty killer. That's the thing that we watched and our scouts thought. He didn't get a lot of power-play time, but he was excellent on the penalty kill."
The trade of Sharangovich eliminates an RFA needing to be signed by the Devils, with the team having 5 pending RFA's and 3 pending UFA's to address before free agency opens on Saturday.
