They needed it big time, and they were rewarded. Lucas Raymond tied the game, Dominik Kubalik scored the winning goal, and the Detroit Red Wings rallied to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks with a 4-3 victory on Wednesday night in Detroit.
Entering the game on a 6 game losing streak, the Red Wings rallied from a 2-0 and 3-2 deficit to pick up the streak snapping win. Alex Chiasson's two assists made him the only Red Wings skater with multiple points as 10 other Red Wings skaters registered one point.
Detroit head coach Derek Lalonde said of the win that "I liked this game a ton. We've talked about not giving up on the season, and tonight was a perfect example of that. We were down 2-0, had an unbelievable second period, then got down 3-2 and still came back."
On the power play 15:51 into the game, Taylor Raddysh scored his 15th goal of the season to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead with Lukas Reichel and Andreas Athanasiou assisting. Raddysh then scored again with 2:02 left in the first, doubling the lead to 2-0 with Cole Guttman and Connor Murphy getting assists.
Jake Walman started the comeback for the Red Wings, cutting the deficit to 2-1 with his 7th goal of the season 2:53 into the second period, assisted by Chiasson and Moritz Seider. Chiasson and David Perron then assisted on Dylan Larkin's goal, scoring with 1:26 left in the second, tying the game at a 2-2 score.
Joey Anderson started the scoring in the 3rd period, giving the Blackhawks the lead back on his 3rd goal of the season. Raymond scored 12:36 into the period to tie the game up 3-3, assisted by Robert Hagg and Ben Chiarot. Kubalik then scored the game winner with 4:07 left on the clock, his 18th goal of the season.
Kubalik said of scoring the winning goal that "You always want to beat the old team. The team is different, obviously, after a lot of trades. There’s not too many guys left that I know, but you always want to play good against them and score or something."
Getting the start for the Red Wings was Ville Husso, who put together a solid performance to get the win. Husso stopped 17 of the 20 shots that the Blackhawks sent at him, which was good for a .850 save percentage.
It was Alex Stalock in goal for the Blackhawks, who wasn't able to outduel Husso on the other end of the ice. Stalock turned aside 37 out of the 41 shots on goal the Red Wings had, recording a .902 save percentage.
Raddysh said of the loss that "I thought we were soft in every area tonight, and that's not the way we need to be playing. We didn't help Stalock tonight, and he still gave us a chance right to the end. I feel like there have been a lot of games where he's been dialed in and we haven't played well in front of him."
Up next, the Blackhawks travel to Florida to face the Florida Panthers on Friday, with Petr Mrazek expected to start. The Red Wings take on the Boston Bruins on Saturday afternoon, with Magnus Hellberg the projected starter.
