It's early March and we already have a ticket punched. Hampus Lindholm scored, Garnet Hathaway scored the winning goal, and the Boston Bruins rallied to defeat the Detroit Red Wings with a 3-2 victory on Saturday afternoon in Boston.
The win gives the Bruins their 50th of the season in 64 games, becoming the fastest team in NHL history to reach that mark. They also officially punched their ticket to the playoffs on Saturday, becoming the first team in the league to do so. It was a bounce back win after their 10 game win streak was snapped.
Hathaway said of the milestone that "Fifty wins is great. And it’s kind of a testament to how hard this team has continued to work throughout the year. But I think guys want 51, you know? Guys are excited to play this team tomorrow already."
Andrew Copp got the Red Wings an early lead, scoring shorthanded just 1:36 into the game to make it 1-0, scoring his 7th goal of the season unassisted. Alex Chiasson scored his first goal of the season on a Red Wings power play, lighting the lamp 4:32 into the period, with assists coming from Dylan Larkin and David Perron.
The Bruins got on the board 12:43 into the second period, with Hampus Lindholm scoring his 8th goal of the season. Boston then tied the game on Patrice Bergeron's 24th goal of the season, assisted by Dmitry Orlov and Jake Debrusk. Hathaway scored the only goal of the 3rd period for the Bruins to give them a 3-2 win.
Bruins forward AJ Greer said that "Detroit pushed hard in the beginning of the game, and I thought in the second period we played our best hockey. Bruins hockey. It was just relentless and offensive driven, connected. A little slip in the third, but again, we're looking at it as, you know, we just got to make sure to overcome these hardships and these push backs that team gave us."
It was Linus Ullmark in goal for the Bruins, putting together a strong start for the Bruins as they came back. Ullmark made 29 saves on 31 shots from the Red Wings, good for a .935 save percentage. His record improved to 33-4-1 on the season.
Getting the start for the Red Wings was Magnus Hellberg, who dropped to 4-7-1 in 13 games. Hellberg turned aside 35 out of the 38 shots he faced from the Bruins, recording a .921 save percentage in the setback.
Detroit head coach Derek Lalonde said of the loss that the "Second period burned us. Our four penalties happened in the first 30-35 minutes, and it's just too much on our group. And it just gives their top guys too much momentum. So it's unfortunate because we had a really good opportunity."
The Bruins and Red Wings face each other again on Sunday afternoon, with Jeremy Swayman starting for the Bruins and Ville Husso going for the Red Wings.
