This move came with little fanfare beforehand. The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired LW/RW Tanner Jeannot from the Nashville Predators in exchange for D Cal Foote, a conditional 2025 first round pick, a 2024 second round pick, and 2023 3rd, 4th, and 5th round picks, according to both teams.
Jeannot was originally signed by Nashville as an undrafted free agent in April of 2018 and made his debut in the shortened 2021 season. He signed a two year, $1.6 million contract prior to the 2021-2022 season, making him an RFA at the end of the season. Jeannot will have arbitration rights this time around.
So far this season, Jeannot has cooled off from a torrid rookie season. He has just 5 goals and 9 assists on the year, recording a -1 plus/minus rating while averaging 15:05 of ice time per game in 56 games for the Predators this season. His shooting percentage has dropped from 19.4 percent to just 5.7 percent.
In two full seasons and a portion of a 3rd one, Jeannot has largely been productive. Since debuting, he has amassed 34 goals and 28 assists, averaging 15:17 of ice time per game while posting a +7 plus/minus rating in 152 regular season games. He has no goals and two assists in 9 career playoff games.
Thanks to this move and others in prior years, the Lightning are now without a first round pick until the 2026 draft. They also aren't scheduled to pick in this year's draft until the 6th round, barring further moves. The Lightning have spent draft pick capital in trade deadline moves to bring in Nick Paul, Brandon Hagel, Barclay Goodrow, David Savard, Blake Coleman, and others in their contending window.
The only player coming to Nashville is Foote, a right shot defenseman who, like Jeannot, is a pending RFA. Foote is in the final year of a two year, $1.7 million contract signed before the 2021-2022 season. He was a first round pick of the Lighting in the 2017 draft.
Foote hasn't seen a lot of playing time thanks to Tampa Bay's defensive depth this season. He has one goal and two assists on the season, averaging 14:12 of ice time per game while posting a +3 rating in 26 games.
While Tampa Bay has moved a lot of draft capital, the Predators are now clearly beefing it up. In the first 5 rounds of the 2023 draft, Nashville has 10 picks to work with, along with 3 second round choices in the 2024 draft. They had already dealt forward Nino Niederreiter to the Winnipeg Jets prior to moving Jeannot.
As things stand right now, the Lightning sit in 3rd place in the competitive Atlantic Division, heading straight towards a first round rematch with the Toronto Maple Leafs come playoff time. Nashville is currently 6 points behind the Seattle Kraken for the final Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.
