The All Star Break has been busy in the nation's capital. The Washington Capitals and LW Sonny Milano have agreed to a 3 year, $5.7 million contract extension, according to an announcement from the Capitals.

Milano became a UFA this past offseason after he was non tendered by the Anaheim Ducks following a career season. After being released from a PTO with the Calgary Flames, he found his way to Washington and has enjoyed success since donning the uniform for the first time. Milano was a pending UFA.

So far this season, Milano is having another productive season. Entering the second half of the season, Milano has 8 goals and 14 assists for 22 points, averaging 13:30 of ice time per game while posting a -2 plus/minus rating in 40 games for the Capitals.

The new contract for Milano has a $1.9 million AAV over all 3 years, a hefty pay raise from the $750,000 deal he signed with the Capitals for this season. The former first round pick in 2014 will be a UFA at the conclusion of the contract.

Milano has suited up for the Capitals, Ducks, and Columbus Blue Jackets in 8 NHL seasons to date. He has 44 goals and 59 assists to his name, posting a -28 plus/minus rating while averaging 13:18 of ice time per game, playing in 237 games. In 4 playoff games, split between 2016-2017 and 2017-2018, Milano has no points.

The 2021-2022 season was Milano's best to date, setting a career high in assists with 20, tying a career high in goals with 14, and setting a career high in points with 34 in 66 games that season. His most memorable moment came against the Buffalo Sabres, when Milano scored a goal on Trevor Zegras's alley oop style assist that went viral.

In addition to extending Milano, the Capitals also extended young center Dylan Strome for 5 years over the All Star Break.
