Well this trade certainly sprung out of thin air. The New York Islanders have acquired C Bo Horvat from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for LW Anthony Beauvillier, C Aatu Raty, and a conditional 2023 first round pick, according to both teams.

In the trade, the Canucks are retaining 25 percent of Horvat's $5.5 million contract for this year, with the former Canucks captain scheduled to be a UFA at the end of the year. The first round pick going to Vancouver is top 12 protected, so the pick will be a 2024 first round pick if the Canucks pick within the top 12 in the 2023 draft.

Horvat is enjoying a career year with the Canucks, his 4th season as the captain. Horvat has tied a career high with 31 goals, adding 23 assists and a +3 rating while averaging 20:49 of ice time per game in 49 games so far this season. Horvat was slated to represent the Canucks at the All Star Game.

Vancouver GM Patrik Allvin said of the trade that "First of all, we would like to thank Bo Horvat for all that he has done for the Vancouver Canucks during his nine seasons in Vancouver. He has been a great leader and ambassador for our hockey club. As difficult as it is to trade away our captain, we are excited to add a high-quality 25-year-old winger in Anthony Beauvillier, a young center in Aatu Raty, and a protected first-round draft pick. These pieces will be a big part of our development and growth moving forward."

Horvat has spent 9 seasons in the NHL with the Canucks since being chosen with the 9th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft. Since his debut, he has accumulated 201 goals and 219 assists, averaging 18:32 of ice time per game while posting a -65 plus/minus rating in 621 games. Horvat has 11 goals and 5 assists in 23 career playoff games.

The main piece coming back to Vancouver is Beauviller, a former first round pick of the 2015 NHL Draft. Beauviller is 7th on the Islanders in points, with 9 goals and 11 assists to his name. He has averaged 15:47 of ice time in 49 games in his 7th year in the NHL.

Beauviller is on the second season of a 3 year, $12.45 million deal signed with the Islanders prior to 2021-2022. He's on the hook for $4.15 million this season and in 2023-2024. He is scheduled to be a UFA following the 2023-2024 season.

The other piece returning to the Canucks is Raty, in the midst of his first NHL season. So far this season, Raty has 2 goals and a +1 plus/minus rating, averaging 8:46 of ice time in 12 games. He has 7 goals and 8 assists in 27 games with AHL Bridgeport.

In Horvat, the Islanders are getting a gifted scorer as they try to inject life into their offense, with the Islanders sitting in 6th place in the Metropolitan Division with 55 points, two points out of a playoff spot. The Canucks sit in 6th in the Pacific Division with 43 points, 14 points out of a playoff spot.
