Detroit was the site of a streak increasing. Auston Matthews had a goal and an assist, Mitch Marner scored, and the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Detroit Red Wings with a 4-2 victory on Monday night in Detroit.

The goal by Marner ups his current point streak to 17 games. That mark is one game shy of Darryl Sittler's 18 game point streak in 1977-78 for the Maple Leafs franchise record. The Maple Leafs have a 7-1-2 record in their last 10 games as a result, their record now at 14-5-5.

Toronto head coach Sheldon Keefe said of the road win that "This was our best game of the trip. Our goaltender was outstanding, just like he's been all trip. The way he's playing, if he sees it, he's stopping it."

Moritz Seider scored the first goal of the game, giving the Red Wings a 1-0 lead 4:45 into the game on his second goal of the season. At the 8:24 mark of the first, Matthews scored the equalizer for the Leafs on his 11th goal of the season. William Nylander scored a power play goal less than a minute later to make it 2-1 Toronto after one.

Early on in the second period, Marner scored just 52 seconds in, upping the Maple Leafs lead to 3-1 thanks to his 7th goal of the season. That lead became 4-1 on Rasmus Sandin's first goal, coming 8:37 into the second period. Adam Erne scored in the 3rd period to cut Detroit's deficit to 4-2, but they couldn't score again.

Getting the start for the Maple Leafs was Matt Murray, who picked up a win thanks to an outstanding start. Murray saved 42 of the 44 shots from the Red Wings, recording a .955 save percentage as his record increased to 5-1-1 on the season.

It was Ville Husso who got the start for the Red Wings, getting the loss on a quick hook. Husso allowed 4 goals on 13 shots before he was pulled in favor of Alex Nedeljkovic, who saved 12 shots in relief. Husso now has a 9-3-3 record in 15 starts.

Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde said of the loss that "I’m sure Huss would probably want three of the four back. But it is tough to not see much action at all in your end, and then you’ve got Matthews and Marner in the inner slot. We didn’t give up many chances, but the ones we did give up were too good."

Both teams get back in action with Wednesday night home games. Murray is projected to start for the Maple Leafs when they host the San Jose Sharks, while Nedeljkovic is the expected starter for the Red Wings as they face the Buffalo Sabres.
