Training camp hasn't even started yet, and players are already going down. Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Jake McCabe is expected to be sidelined for 10-12 weeks after undergoing surgery, according to the Blackhawks.

Chicago announced the news on Tuesday, and McCabe would take roughly 10-12 weeks to recover. 10 weeks from the announcement on Tuesday would be November 22, and the 12 week mark would be on December 6. He underwent cervical spine surgery.

The Blackhawks open training camp on Wednesday, September 21, and begin their regular season against the Colorado Avalanche on October 12. This season is McCabe's second year of a 4 year, 16 million deal he signed with the Blackhawks prior to last season. McCabe has a $4 million AAV and a modified no trade clause for all 4 seasons.

Last season with the Blackhawks was McCabe's first in the windy city. He ended the regular season with 4 goals and 18 assists, posting a -27 plus/minus rating over 20:18 average ice time in 75 regular season games for Chicago last season.

In his career, McCabe has played for the Blackhawks and Buffalo Sabres over 8 NHL seasons. Over that time, McCabe has 22 goals and 77 assists to his name, averaging 19:26 of ice time per game while recording a -55 plus/minus rating in 428 career regular season games. McCabe has never appeared in a playoff game.

McCabe has run into some tough injury luck in previous seasons. In the shortened 2021 season, McCabe played just 13 games before sustaining injuries to the ACL, MCL, and Meniscus in his right knee, forcing him to miss the remainder of the season. He also missed 29 games in the 2017-2018 season with a shoulder injury.

In addition to McCabe, Blackhawks forward prospect Jalen Luypen had surgery on his left rotator cuff and is expected to be sidelined for 14-18 weeks.
