They needed a goalie move, and here's the goalie move. The Vegas Golden Knights have acquired G Adin Hill from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a 2024 4th round draft pick, according to both the Golden Knights and Sharks.
The move comes as top goalie Robin Lehner is set to miss the 2022-2023 season after undergoing offseason surgery. Hill joins a current depth chart of Logan Thompson and Laurent Brossoit at the top, with Michael Hutchinson the 3rd goaltender before the trade. Brossoit underwent surgery in the offseason and may not be ready for the start of the season.
Vegas GM Kelly McCrimmon talked about acquiring Hill, saying that "This puts another really good goalie in our organization and in our mix. It gives us a lot more comfort going into the year. I believe Adin has a lot of ability and he has really good size."
Entering this season, Hill will be on the second season of a contract he signed last year with the Sharks. The deal was for two years and $4.35 million. It has a $2.175 million AAV, and Hill will be a UFA at the conclusion of this season.
Last season with the Sharks was Hill's only year in San Jose. He ended the season with a 10-11-1 record, notching a 2.66 GAA and .906 save percentage, picking up 12 quality starts and two shutouts in 22 starts and 3 relief appearances.
Hill, a former 3rd round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, has spent 5 seasons in the NHL, with the Sharks and Arizona Coyotes. In his career, Hill has a 29-32-5 record, recording a 2.74 GAA and .908 save percentage, adding 31 quality starts and 5 career shutouts, making 63 starts and another 9 appearances in relief.
Sharks GM Mike Grier said of dealing Hill that "James Reimer and Kaapo Kahkonen are experienced veterans who are capable of providing quality goaltending for our team. We have significantly increased our organizational depth at the goaltending position over the last six months. This trade provides an opportunity for Adin to compete for playing time, while adding another asset that our organization can use in the future. We wish Adin the best in Vegas."
In Vegas, Hill will compete with Thompson and Brossoit for playing time during the regular season. Hill joins Hutchinson and Kessel as additions this offseason for the Golden Knights, who lost Max Pacioretty and Evgenii Dadonov this summer.
