One of the top prizes this offseason is now sticking around long term. The Calgary Flames and LW Jonathan Huberdeau have agreed to a 8 year, $84 million extension, according to an announcement by the team on Thursday.

Huberdeau was one of the leaders of a dynamic Florida Panthers team last season that won the Presidents Trophy as the best record in the NHL. He finished in 5th place in voting for league MVP, and now gets rewarded handsomely by his new team after being traded this offseason. Huberdeau was set to be a UFA after this season.

Calgary GM Brad Treliving said that "We are excited to extend Jonathan long term in Calgary. He is an elite player, one of the premier forwards in the league who makes players around him better. We look forward to welcoming Jonathan to our community and his contributions to our team's success."

This season, Huberdeau will play out the final year of a 6 year deal signed with the Panthers, worth $5.9 million with a modified no trade clause. The extension won't kick in until the 2023-2024 season, and his AAV will jump to $10.5 million. He will make $61.5 million in signing bonuses in his extension, and has a full no movement clause for the first 6 seasons of the deal, followed by a modified no trade clause for the final two seasons.

Last season with the Panthers, Huberdeau posted a career high in assists while matching a career high in goals. He recorded 30 goals and 85 assists, posting a +35 plus/minus rating in 19:25 of ice time across 80 games. He added one goal and 4 assists in 10 playoff games last season.

Huberdeau has spent 10 seasons in the NHL, all with the Panthers. In that time, he has 198 goals and 415 assists, averaging 18:05 of ice time while posting a +41 plus/minus rating in 671 regular season games. He has another 5 goals and 16 assists in 26 career playoff games.

Asked about signing long term with the Flames, Huberdeau said that "I'm thrilled to be part of the Calgary Flames organization long-term. I'm excited for this new chapter and I am committed to this team. I'll give everything I have, on and off the ice and I can't wait to play in front of the passionate Flames fans."

Since being taken with the 3rd overall pick by the Panthers in the 2011 NHL Draft, Huberdeau had been a mainstay of the team, being an alternate captain more recently, and having always been a productive scorer, scoring less than 10 goals in a season only once in his career. He finished last year tied with Johnny Gaudreau for the most points in the NHL with 115.

This offseason, the Flames acquired Huberdeau along with MacKenzie Weegar, Cole Schwindt, and a first round pick in the Matthew Tkachuk trade, with the Flames sending Tkachuk and a 2025 4th round pick back to the Panthers.
