Seeing an opportunity to invest in a breakout season, the Dallas Stars jumped at the chance. The Stars and LW Mason Marchment have agreed to a 4 year, $18 million deal, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. The Stars have confirmed the deal.
Playing on just an $800,000 salary last season, Marchment experienced a breakout campaign with the Florida Panthers, which led him to Dallas. Marchment's new contract is worth $4.5 million annually, and has a $1 million signing bonus for 3 seasons. He has a full no movement clause for this season, and a modified no trade clause for the final 3 seasons.
While Marchment did have a big year on the scoresheet last year, he can serve in a few different roles. His scoring ability can put him on middle six lines, and he can be in the bottom six due to his size and checking ability, with his physicality another weapon the Stars can use with him.
Stars GM Jim Nill said of signing Marchment that "Mason is a young and talented two-way player that will immediately bolster our lineup. He possesses offensive skill and has shown he has the size, physicality and grit to make an impact on both sides of the puck."
Last season with the Panthers, Marchment ended the regular season with 18 goals and 29 assists, recording a +29 plus/minus rating in 14:07 of ice time per game in 54 regular season games. In the playoffs, Marchment added one goal in 4 games.
In his NHL career, spanning 3 seasons with the Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs, Marchment has 20 goals and 38 assists, averaging 13:52 of ice time per game while recording a +33 plus/minus rating in 91 regular season games. Marchment has an additional 3 goals with zero assists in 10 career playoff games.
The signing of Marchment is a move by the Stars to balance their overall team depth as they enter a season with a new head coach and looking to reset to make a move toward the Stanley Cup.
