Needing a goalie that doesn't need to play much, the New York Rangers went the veteran route. The Rangers and G Jaroslav Halak have agreed to a one year, $1.5 million deal, according to Darren Dreger of TSN. The Rangers have confirmed the deal.

Last season, Halak played for the Vancouver Canucks as a backup, making $1.5 million with a full no movement clause. That is the case again this year, with Halak making $1.5 million with a full no move clause. Halak has $50,000 in performance bonuses and a $250,000 signing bonus.

Halak has had some strong numbers in his career prior to joining the Rangers. He has won the William Jennings award twice, which is given to the pair of goalies on a team that combined for the fewest goals scored against them in the regular season, minimum of 25 games. Halak won it with Brian Elliott in 2011-2012 with the St. Louis Blues, and Tuukka Rask with the Boston Bruins in the 2019-2020 season.

Continuing on, Halak has also finished in the top 10 of Vezina Trophy voting two times, in 2011-2012 and 2009-2010. His 2.39 GAA in 2019-2020 with the Bruins was good for the 6th best in the NHL. Halak was named to the NHL All Star game in 2014-2015, and had a career high save percentage and GAA in 2011-2012.

Playing for the Canucks last season, Halak ended the regular season with a 4-7-2 record, with a 2.94 GAA and .903 save percentage, recording 8 quality starts out of 14 total starts and 3 relief appearances for the Canucks, who had 92 points and finished in 5th place in the Pacific Division.

Across his long NHL career, Halak has a 285-180-64 record, with a 2.49 GAA and .916 save percentage, adding 291 quality starts and 52 shutouts in 515 starts and 41 relief outings. He has a 17-20 record with a 2.48 GAA and .919 save percentage in 37 playoff starts and two relief outings.

Halak's career has been very lengthy as a 37 year old goalie. Since debuting for the Montreal Canadiens in 2006-2007, he has played for the Canadiens, Blues, Washington Capitals, New York Islanders, Bruins, and the Canucks, with the Rangers marking his 7th NHL team.

The signing of Halak is merely a depth move for the Rangers, who needed a backup goalie to replace Alexandar Georgiev, who was traded to the Colorado Avalanche. The Rangers also signed likely 3rd string goalie Louis Domingue this offseason.
