Needing another goalie, the St. Louis Blues turned to the motor city. The Blues and G Thomas Greiss have agreed to a one year, $1.25 million deal, according to an announcement made by the Blues.
With goalie Ville Husso signing with, ironically, the Red Wings, the Blues needed another goalie to pair with the entrenched goalie Jordan Binnington. Enter Greiss, a 36 year old journeyman who has played for 5 teams in his NHL career since being selected by the San Jose Sharks in the 3rd round of the 2004 NHL Draft.
Last season with the Red Wings, Greiss ended the regular season with a 10-15-1 record, posting 14 quality starts amidst a 3.66 GAA and .891 save percentage, starting in 28 games and appearing in 3 games in relief for the Red Wings, who finished in 6th place in the Atlantic Division with 74 points.
In 13 NHL seasons with 5 different teams, Greiss has a lifetime 155-120-37 record with a 2.72 GAA and .912 save percentage, with 169 quality starts and 15 shutouts in 305 starts and 42 relief appearances. He has a career 7-8 record with a 2.43 GAA and .922 save percentage in 14 playoff starts and 3 relief outings.
One of Greiss's best seasons came in 2018-2019 while with the New York Islanders. Paired with Robin Lehner, they took home the William Jennings trophy, given to the two goalies that play a minimum of 25 games in a season and have the combined fewest goals against during the regular season.
The signing of Greiss is simply a move to shore up goaltending depth for the Blues, as he figures to be the top backup to Binnington when at full health, thanks to a surge in production from Binnington during the playoffs.
