The Montreal Canadiens were in some trouble. After they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Stanley cup finals, some troubling news came out. Captain and bona fide defense leader Shea Weber's career was in serious doubt. The Canadiens needed another big sturdy defenseman to help fill the Weber sized void.

So, they turned to the Lightning. The Canadiens have signed right shot D and native of Quebec David Savard to a 4 year, $14 million contract, with a $3.5 million AAV, according to Pierre Lebrun of TSN. The Canadiens have confirmed the deal.

Savard said of choosing Montreal that "I was definitely trying to find the best fit, a team that wanted to have me, and I think Montreal showed a lot of interest right away. And for me it was easy, the way they spoke to us and the way they wanted us to be there and to be a big part of their team moving forward."

After he was acquired by the Lightning at last season's trade deadline, Savard did not tally any points in the regular season, finishing with just one goal and 5 assists in 54 regular season games, 14 with the Lightning. In 20 playoff games, Savard finished with 5 assists, helping lead the Lightning to their second straight cup win.

In his 10 season NHL career, split between the Lightning and the Columbus Blue Jackets, Savard has 41 goals and 125 assists, with a +16 plus/minus in an ATOI of 20:26, playing in 611 regular season games, 597 of them in a Blue Jackets uniform. He has one goal and 15 assists in 57 career playoff games as well.

Savard said of Montreal that "Obviously, a month ago it was completely different when we were playing them, but now I'm really happy to be on their side now. They have a young team that showed a lot of good things and I was pretty impressed in the Final, how they handled themselves and how they played and how hard they played. So I'm excited to join the group and help them win and get to the Stanley Cup Final again."
