Seeking a veteran option at goalie to pair with Jack Campbell, the Toronto Maple Leafs went to the Carolina Hurricanes. The Maple Leafs have signed G Petr Mrazek to a 3 year, $11.4 million contract, with a $3.8 million AAV, according to Darren Dreger of TSN. The Maple Leafs have confirmed the deal.
Asked about what led to going to Toronto, Mrazek said "I was really happy when my agent said that Toronto reached out about it. You know the team they have and the history of Toronto is great so it was an easy choice. The team that they have is great starting with the general manager, the coaching staff. The team in front of the goal is powerful, a lot of skills and, you know, guys can score goals and win games."
Last season, in limited action due to an early season injury, Mrazek had a 6-2-3 record in 12 starts, with a 2.06 GAA and a .923 save percentage. In his 9 seasons of NHL play, Mrazek has a 128-96-31 record in 275 appearances, 250 of them being starts. He has a 2.59 GAA and a .911 save percentage as well.
Mrazek was chosen by the Detroit Red Wings in the 5th round of the 2010 NHL Draft, and made his debut in the 2012-2013 season. In his 9 year NHL career, Mrazek has played for the Red Wings, Philadelphia Flyers, and the Hurricanes most recently.
Toronto GM Kyle Dubas said of Mrazek that "We were fortunate going in that we already had Jack Campbell who we feel very strongly about. We felt we needed to find a strong partner for him so we can have as good a tandem as possible and we felt we achieved that with Petr today. We really wanted someone with a long track record of being a very good goaltender in the League and from that point on it was trying to find the best value, which we feel we did with Petr."
In Toronto, Mrazek will likely assume the role of backup to Campbell, who had a career season last year, and is poised to take the reigns as starter. Mrazek is replacing Frederik Andersen.
