Flyers sign Brassard

Entering Wednesday, the Philadelphia Flyers had 8 players currently on their roster listed as centers. Well, they signed another one anyway. The Flyers and C Derick Brassard have agreed to a one year, $825,000 deal, according to the Flyers in an announcement Wednesday morning.

The move is made with familiarity in mind for both Brassard and the Flyers. Despite not having played in Philadelphia, he is familiar with Flyers head coach Alain Vigneault. Brassard played with the New York Rangers for 3 1/2 seasons, from 2013 to 2016, when Vigneault was head coach in New York.

Last season, Brassard was a member of the Arizona Coyotes, where he scored 8 goals and dished out 12 assists, with a -10 plus/minus in an ATOI of 14:48, playing in 53 regular season games. The Coyotes did not make the playoffs last season, the only season Brassard was in Arizona.

Brassard had been a UFA up until Wednesday morning, as the Coyotes were content to let him walk rather than trying to re-sign him. It's a big loss at the face off dot for the Coyotes, however, as Brassard finished first on the team in face off winning percentage, winning 52.6 percent of his draws at the dot last season.

In his 14 seasons in the NHL, Brassard has 194 goals and 309 assists, with a -35 plus/minus in an ATOI of 16:05, playing in 905 regular season games. In his playoff career, Brassard has 25 goals and 43 assists to his name across 117 playoff games.

Brassard, a first round pick, 6th overall, by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2006 NHL draft, has played for 8 teams in his 14 seasons, with the Flyers now being his 9th. He has suited up for the Blue Jackets, Rangers, Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins, Colorado Avalanche, Florida Panthers, New York Islanders, and the Coyotes.

By signing in Philadelphia, Brassard will join a center group for the Flyers that features Claude Giroux, Kevin Hayes, Sean Couturier, Scott Laughton, Nate Thompson, and more.
