Flyers avoid arbitration with Sanheim

Thanks to the Philadelphia Flyers, every single arbitration case has now been settled. The Flyers and left shot D Travis Sanheim have agreed to a two year, $9.35 million deal, with an AAV of just over $4.6 million, according to Cap Friendly. The Flyers have confirmed the deal.

Last season, the offensive defenseman put up 3 goals and 12 assists, with a -22 plus/minus in an ATOI of 21:53, suiting up for 55 of the 56 regular season games played by the Flyers, who missed the playoffs. In 4 NHL seasons, Sanheim has 22 goals and 63 assists to his name, with a -28 plus/minus in an ATOI of 19:27, playing in 255 regular season games.

Entering the offseason, Sanheim was an RFA with arbitration rights. The team and player can avoid arbitration by simply agreeing on a new deal. It was not agreed upon, and a hearing was scheduled for August 26. But they've now agreed on a deal and avoided arbitration. After the deal expires at the end of the 2022-2023 season, Sanheim will become a UFA.

It was not just Sanheim who was arbitration eligible this offseason. There were 18 other players, for a total of 19, who had arbitration hearings scheduled. All 18 other players had settled on a new contract with their respective teams, leaving Sanheim as the only scheduled arbitration case. Now that he's agreed to a deal, there will be zero cases heading to arbitration this offseason.

In 20 playoff games with the Flyers, Sanheim has two goals and 6 assists. He was a first round pick of the Flyers, chosen with the 17th overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut in the 2017-2018 season, playing 49 games for the Flyers that year.

Sanheim's deal brings back a familiar face in an offseason that has a brand new defense in Philadelphia. The Flyers have signed defenseman Keith Yandle in free agency, and have traded for defensemen Ryan Ellis, Rasmus Ristolainen, Robert Hagg, Philippe Myers, and Shayne Gostisbehere.
