In a quest to change up the defense, the Edmonton Oilers added a forward. Yeah, they traded a defenseman away. The Oilers have acquired LW Warren Foegele from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for right shot D Ethan Bear, according to both teams.
Hurricanes GM Don Waddell was excited to add Bear, saying that "Ethan is a young, right-shot defenseman with offensive upside. We're excited to add him to our team as he continues to grow as an NHL player."
This season, Bear is under contract at a $2 million cap hit for the Hurricanes. He will be an RFA next year unless a new contract gets done. Last season, Bear scored two goals and dished out 6 assists, with a -1 plus/minus in an ATOI of 17:58, playing 43 regular season games. He was held without a point in 4 playoff games. In his career, Bear has 8 goals and 25 assists in 132 games, all with the Oilers.
Coming back to Edmonton is Foegele, who was an RFA before agreeing to a 3 year, $8.25 million contract with the Oilers. He will be paid $2.75 million annually, and will become a UFA when his contract expires. A big bonus with Foegele is his versatility, as he is a left wing who can also play on the right side when necessary.
Oilers GM Ken Holland said of Foegele that "He comes from a really good program. In Carolina, they've done a lot of winning the last two or three years; they've been a good regular-season team, they went to the final four a couple of years ago. He's a big, strong guy, he can skate, he goes to the blue paint, he's dependable."
Last season, Foegele scored 10 goals and put up 10 assists, with a +4 plus/minus in an ATOI of 14:09, playing 53 games in the regular season. In the playoffs, he scored one goal and one assist in 10 playoff games. In his career, Foegele has 35 goals and 33 assists, with a -1 plus/minus in 200 games, split between 4 seasons, all with the Hurricanes.
