Right after extending Teddy Blueger, the Pittsburgh Penguins shipped someone out of town. The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired C Jared McCann from the Penguins in exchange for F Filip Hallander and a 2023 7th round draft pick, according to Pierre Lebrun of TSN. The deal has been confirmed by both teams.

Last season, McCann suited up for 43 of 56 regular season games, scoring 14 goals and adding 18 assists, with a plus/minus of +17 and an average TOI of 14:07 during that time. In 12 career playoff games, McCann has zero goals and 3 assists, one of which came this past playoffs, when the Penguins got eliminated by the New York Islanders in 6 games.

For his career, McCann, a first round pick of the Vancouver Canucks in 2014, has 66 goals and 89 assists, with an average TOI of 13:44 and a +26 plus/minus, across 353 total games, split between the Canucks, Florida Panthers, and Penguins. McCann has one season remaining on a two year, $5.88 million deal he signed with the Penguins entering this season.

For Hallander, it's a homecoming back to the organization that drafted him. He was selected in the second round of the 2018 NHL draft by the Penguins, and was sent to Toronto last season in a return for Kasperi Kapanen. He played for Lulea HF of the Swedish Hockey League this season, where he scored 13 goals and 11 assists in 51 games.

McCann was likely to be exposed by the Penguins in the expansion draft coming up, but, despite the trade, he is still going to be exposed. The Maple Leafs did not put McCann on their protection list for the expansion draft on Wednesday, opting to protect 4 forwards in the 8 skater model, instead of 7 forwards in the 7-3-1 model.
