The Montreal Canadiens are keeping UFA Joel Armia around. The Canadiens are Armia are in agreement on a 4 year contract with a $3.4 million AAV, according to the team.
Last season, Armia recorded 7 goals and 7 assists for the Canadiens, with a +10 plus/minus in an ATOI of 14:42, playing in 41 regular season games. In his 7 year NHL career, Armia has 62 goals and 63 assists, with a +9 plus/minus rating in an ATOI of 14:35, in 336 games played, split between the Buffalo Sabres, Winnipeg Jets, and the Canadiens.
Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin said "Every player is unique. Everybody is different. When Joel is at the top of his game, he's very strong. He controls and protects the puck. He goes to the net. That's why we agreed on a four-year contract, which is a long term."
Since joining Montreal, his 14 total points this season are the worst marks in Armia's career, partly due to the short season, partly due to his own self. He was selected in the first round in 2011 by the Sabres, with the 16th overall pick. He played game number 300 in his career on January 21, against the Canucks.
Despite his down season, Armia helped form a lethal line with Corey Perry and Eric Staal, as the Canadiens made an improbable run to the Stanley cup final, before losing in 5 games to the Lightning. Armia added 5 goals and 3 assists to help the Canadiens in that stretch.
