The Philadelphia Flyers have continued their offseason of revamping and reloading. The Flyers have signed D Keith Yandle to a one year, $900,000 deal, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. The deal with the left shot defenseman was confirmed by the Flyers.
Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher said of bringing in Yandle that "We are excited to add Keith to our team. He is an established veteran defenseman who excels moving the puck and playing on the power play. He is a true professional who comes ready to play every night."
Last season with the Florida Panthers, Yandle put up 3 goals and dished out 24 assists, with a -8 plus/minus in an ATOI of 17:15, playing in all 56 regular season games. In 15 seasons, Yandle has 102 goals and 498 assists, with a -56 plus/minus in an ATOI of 21:17, playing in 1,032 games, split between 3 different teams.
In his long career, Yandle has now played in 922 consecutive regular season games, which is the second longest streak in NHL history, trailing Doug Jarvis, who played in 964 straight games. He played in his 1,000th NHL game this past season, and had two assists in 3 Stanley cup playoff games last season.
Yandle wouldn't have hit free agency this season, but the Panthers opted to buy out his contract this offseason, which made him an unrestricted free agent after 5 seasons with the Panthers. Yandle credits former coach Alain Vigneault and former teammate Kevin Hayes for helping sway him to join the Flyers.
Yandle said "Having played for AV and knowing what he can bring to a team, I think that was a big part. Kevin obviously being one of my best friends and a guy that I train with every day in the summers and I see him around every day, so it's definitely one of those things when you have a friend on another team and feel confident, it definitely made it a little bit easier."
The Flyers have made moves to revamp their defense this offseason, acquiring Rasmus Ristolainen and Ryan Ellis via trade. They also traded for Blue Jackets forward Cam Atkinson.
