With an expansion draft crunch, the Dallas Stars shipped away a pending RFA. The Stars have traded C Jason Dickinson to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a 3rd round draft pick, according to the Stars.
Stars GM Jim Nill said "This is an opportunity for me to thank Jason. We drafted Jason, developed him, he's a great young man and his career is just starting. He's got a great future ahead of him and I just want a chance to thank him. I just got off the phone with him. I just wish him all the best. I talked to Jim Benning, Vancouver has a special player there. He has high-end character, he's a great skater, he's competitive and he's going to be a great fit for the Vancouver Canucks."
Dickinson played in his 6th season in the NHL this past season, where he scored 7 goals and added 8 assists, with a -2 plus/minus and an average TOI of 16:12 in 51 games for the Stars, playing all but 5 regular season games. In his 6 seasons, all with Dallas, Dickinson has 25 goals and 38 assists, with a +10 plus/minus in 221 career games.
Dickinson, a pending RFA, was likely going to be left exposed by the Stars in the upcoming expansion draft for the Seattle Kraken, which takes place on Wednesday night. Instead, he goes to Vancouver, where the Canucks did indeed protect him, alongside top players Bo Horvat, Brock Boeser, Elias Pettersson, and Thatcher Demko.
Nill said "Well, we're allowed to protect seven players and it's tough. We were lucky. We have some very good players, and, in the end, we just had to make a decision. Some of it comes down to contracts, some of it comes down to when they're going to be a restricted free agent or an unrestricted free agent. A lot of different scenarios come into play."
