A top piece of the Boston Bruins defense is back in the fold. The Bruins have re-signed D Mike Reilly to a 3 year, $9 million contract, with a $3 million AAV, according to Pierre Lebrun of TSN. The Bruins have confirmed the deal.
Last season, Reilly played with the Bruins and Ottawa Senators, as he was traded to Boston at the deadline for a 2022 3rd round draft pick. In total, Reilly scored zero goals, but added 27 assists, for a +5 plus/minus in an ATOI of 19:17 in 55 games last season. In 6 seasons, Reilly has 8 goals and 72 assists, with a -9 plus/minus in an ATOI of 16:43 in 259 games.
Reilly said of staying with the Bruins that "It was my intention the whole time to want to stay in Boston. Obviously, there's a process and sometimes it goes slower than you think on certain things. Obviously, the general manager is doing his due diligence and looking around the league and whatnot. I always figured it was gonna work out here. Two days ago, in the afternoon, it came together pretty quick. Was just kind of waiting for that and whether it was gonna happen or not. It ended up happening and obviously very excited."
In his time with the Bruins, Reilly provided Boston with valuable top 4 defense minutes, playing on a pair with Brandon Carlo most of the time. In 11 playoff games, Reilly also had 4 assists and a +3 plus/minus. He has played for now 4 teams in his 6 NHL seasons, so staying with Boston and getting job security was a good thing for Reilly to get.
In returning to Boston, Reilly will likely continue to get top 4 minutes on a Boston defense that needs all the help he can get. When healthy, he could very well continue to be Carlo's D partner.
