Some of the veteran faces of the Minnesota Wild were a big reason for their win Friday night. Nick Bonino scored a goal, Zach Parise scored the game winner, and the Wild topped the San Jose Sharks with a 3-2 win Friday night. Mats Zuccarello scored as well.
In the first period, Tomas Hertl scored to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead 3:32 into the game, but Bonino tied things for the Wild at the 9:30 mark of the first, making it 1-1 after the first period. The second period was all Wild, with Zuccarello and Parise scoring to make it 3-1 Wild. In the 3rd, Evander Kane scored for the Sharks to make it 3-2, but they couldn't muster any more goals.
Bonino said of his goal that "Sometimes you get the bounces, sometimes you don't. I feel like for the most part, Sturm, Parise and myself, our game hasn't changed from Game One to now. The puck didn't go in as much as we would have liked probably the first little bit here, but just try to keep doing the right things and getting rewarded for it now. So it always feels good."
Cam Talbot got the start in net for the Wild, earning the victory to keep his hot streak going. Talbot stopped 20 of 22 shots he faced in the game. Talbot's record improved to 14-6-3 this season, while the Wild sit in 3rd place in the West Division, with a 26-13-3 record this season.
Wild coach Dean Evason said of the secondary scoring that "I mean, clearly it's an asset to have the depth. There's no question when you can just roll, and guys are trusting and making those changes at the proper time because they trust that their teammate coming out is going to have a good chance to get the job done as he is, it's a good feeling for the group, for sure."
On the other side, Martin Jones got the loss in net for the Sharks, despite the fact that he faced a low shot volume. Jones stopped 15 of the just 18 shots that he faced during the game. Jones' record dropped to 15-11-2 this season, while the Sharks have an 18-21-4 record, 6th in the West Division.
Sharks captain Logan Couture said of the loss that "I thought we gave ourselves a chance to win. I thought defensively we were pretty good. We didn't give up much, but there wasn't much out there offensively. But we've got to find a way to do more. We only scored one or two over the last three or four games, so we need to find some offense."
Both teams play again tonight, with Jones starting in net for the Sharks, and Kaapo Kahkonen starting for the Wild.
