After a mass Covid-19 outbreak on the Vancouver Canucks, many were wondering if they would even be able to resume the season. They were able to Sunday night, and man they fought hard. Nils Hoglander scored, Bo Horvat contributed the OT winner, and the Canucks defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs with a 3-2 win Sunday night in the first game in almost a month.
William Nylander got the Leafs on the board 3:45 into the first period, and Auston Matthews scored 14:57 into the second period to give Toronto a 2-0 lead. Horvat then scored near the end of the second to make it 2-1 Leafs. 12:03 into the 3rd, Hoglander scored his 8th goal of the season to tie things at two. Just 1:19 into overtime, Horvat scored his second of the night to make it 3-2 Canucks.
Horvat, who finished his game with two goals and an assist, was very proud of the team after their win, saying that "I couldn't prouder of our guys in that room. The way they manned up tonight and stuck with the process and willed their way to that win."
Braden Holtby started for the Canucks with Thatcher Demko out for the game. Holtby turned in a fantastic performance, stopping 37 of 39 shots to earn the victory. Holtby's record increased to 5-6-2 this season, while the Canucks sit in 6th in the North Division, with a 17-18-3 record this season.
Canucks coach Travis Green said of the win that "This isn't just your regular win during the regular season. It's a special win. We've gone through a lot here with our group over the last few weeks. I'm proud of our group and how we stuck with it and won."
On the other side, Jack Campbell got the start for the Maple Leafs in goal, taking the loss. Campbell stopped 21 of 24 shots to take the loss. Campbell suffered just his 3rd loss of the season, now sitting at an 11-2-1 record, while Toronto is tops in the North Division, with a 28-12-5 record.
Matthews lamented the Leafs loss after the game, saying that "We had plenty of chances, enough to obviously win the game and add to our lead, but you've got to tip your hat to the goalie. Holtby played unreal tonight. He made some unbelievable saves."
The Maple Leafs and Canucks face off again on Tuesday, with Demko slated to start for the Canucks, and Campbell expected to start for the Leafs.
