With backup goalie Pavel Francouz out for the season and Jonas Johansson being a number 3 goalie, the Colorado Avalanche needed a true number two goalie. They got one. The Avalanche have acquired G Devan Dubnyk from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for D Greg Pateryn and a 2021 5th round draft pick. The Avalanche have confirmed the trade.
For the Avalanche, they get a lucky bounce in this deal to help their cap situation. Although the Sharks aren't retaining any of Dubnyk's salary, the Minnesota Wild were already retaining half of his salary from the trade that sent Dubnyk to the Sharks to begin with. Dubnyk has a 3-9-2 record, 3.18 GAA, and a .898 save percentage this season with the Sharks.
Dubnyk has played for a variety of teams. He has suited up for the Sharks, Wild, Edmonton Oilers, Arizona Coyotes, and the Nashville Predators across 537 career games. Minnesota was the most lengthy stop in Dubnyk's career, spending 6 seasons with the Wild, where he is the franchise leader in playoff games played, playoff wins, and playoff shutouts.
Dubnyk, who was a first round pick by the Oilers in the first round of the 2004 draft, had his breakout season in 2014-2015 with the Coyotes and Wild, posting a 36-14-4 record with a .929 save percentage, and a 2.07 GAA, which resulted in him finishing 3rd in the voting for the Vezina Trophy, and 4th for the Hart Trophy.
The Avalanche have approximately $2 million in cap space left, so it's possible they could make another move before the 3:00 PM deadline on Monday, but backup goalie was the significant need in Colorado, which they fortified.
