For Nashville Predators defensemen Dante Fabbro, his first game winning goal came at the perfect time. Fabbro scored the game winner with 1:00 left, Ryan Ellis added a power play goal, and the Predators topped the Detroit Red Wings with a 3-2 win thanks to Fabbro's goal. The Predators also snapped their 3 game losing streak with the win.
Ellis started the scoring for Nashville, with a power play tally 14:58 into the first period. At 19:25, Robby Fabbri tied it for the Red Wings late in the period. In the second, Matt Duchene and Marc Staal both scored in the final minute, about 14 seconds apart, to keep it tied 2-2. With 1:00 left, Fabbro sent one to the back of the net to give Nashville the lead, which they held on to.
Fabbro said of the win that "The win was good for our team. We've just got to clean up a few areas. I thought we made it a little too hard on Peks at points throughout the game, but he stood on his head and played unbelievable, so big credit to him as well."
Pekka Rinne started the game for the Predators, and picked up the win, stopping 24 of 26 shots that came his way as the Predators improved to 6-8-0, but still only 7th in the NHL's Central Division. Rinne also improved his record to 3-4-0 with the win.
Rinne also talked about getting the win, saying that "It feels good. It's been a grind the last few weeks, and when you lose games, it seems like everything becomes a little bit harder and you start maybe doubting yourself. But we stuck together, and it's a huge win. It was a gutsy effort. Specialty teams have been a bit of an issue, and tonight, we won that battle, so there were a lot of positive things."
The only team the Predators are ahead of in the central division is the Red Wings, who fall to 3-10-2 on the season with the loss, including 4 losses in 5 games so far in February. Thomas Greiss started for the Red Wings, stopping 20 of 23 shots, falling to a measly 1-9-2 on the season.
Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin talked about the late goal by Fabbro, saying that "Yeah, it was a tough one there. Simple hockey, we didn't get our puck out of the blue line. We played a tough game tonight, we've got to manage the puck there, and can't give up a last-minute goal. It was a tough pill to swallow, for sure."
The two teams square off again in Nashville on Saturday, with Greiss expected to start for Detroit, while Juuse Saros figures to start for the Predators.
