Winnipeg Jets goalie Laurent Brossoit is from British Columbia, so when he got the start against the Vancouver Canucks in his native province, he put up some stellar numbers. Brossoit saved 29 shots, posted his second career shut out, and the Jets topped the Vancouver Canucks with a 2-0 win on Friday. The Jets were able to continue their good start to the season, while the Canucks have been on a bit of a downward spiral.

Mark Scheifele started the scoring for the Jets at the 7:25 mark of the first period, slipping one into the net on the breakaway to give the Jets a 1-0 lead early on. It remained 1-0 Jets until the 18:43 mark of the 3rd period, when Mason Appleton scored an empty net goal to make it a 2-0 Jets win.

Scheifele talked about what happened leading up to his breakaway goal, saying that "I saw he was far out of the net, but he's a stellar goaltender, a big body. I just made my move and he bit a little bit. I was happy to put it in. I don't get many breakaways so it's fun when you put them in."

Brossoit picked up his second career shut out, stopping all 29 shots that came his way in the win. Brossoit improved his record to 3-1-0 on the season, while the Jets as a team improved to 10-6-1 on the season, good for 3rd place in the NHL's North Division, so the Jets would be in the playoffs if the season ended today.

Jets coach Paul Maurice said of the win that "Being able to be on the road, especially, and grind one. They got very aggressive with their back end up the ice, there is confusion that causes. All the games that you can put together, have a low-scoring game, not have your forwards get frustrated because the offence isn't there for them is a really big part of it. But the confidence that they'll build on low scoring wins is important."

The Canucks fell to 8-12-1 on the season as their downward spiral continues, as they now sit in 6th place in the North Division, ahead of only the Ottawa Senators. Thatcher Demko started in the losing effort for Vancouver, saving 29 of 30 shots, as his record fell to 4-7-1 this season.

Canucks forward Elias Petterson said of the loss that "I'm just getting tired of saying we played a good game but we didn't score. It was another one of those tonight. We have shot opportunities, especially me. I'm trying to make the perfect pass when maybe I can shoot the easy shot and create a scramble and maybe, hopefully, score a goal. Maybe now when the puck isn't going in, just got to simplify."

The Jets and Canucks face off again on Sunday, where Connor Hellebuyck is slated to start for the Jets, while Braden Holtby looks to start for Vancouver.
